Vinyl Composition Tile in Missouri City
Vinyl composition tile is a hard-wearing, low-cost floor made for heavy traffic, and it suits a laundry room, workshop or playroom in your home. We prep the floor carefully, set tight joints and leave you a surface that wipes clean in minutes.
A practical floor for the rooms that take a beating
Vinyl composition tile, usually called VCT, is mostly limestone bound with vinyl resin and pressed into 12-inch squares. The color runs through the full thickness of each tile, so there is no printed layer to wear off. Scuffs land on the surface finish, not in the tile itself.
The trade-off is upkeep. VCT is porous until it is coated with floor finish, and it looks its best when that finish is renewed every so often. If you want a softer feel underfoot or a wood look with no polishing, we will tell you so and suggest luxury vinyl tile or luxury vinyl plank instead. We would rather you end up with the right floor than the one you asked about first, the same advice we would give a neighbor.
Most people who choose it want a mudroom, utility room, home gym or checkerboard kitchen that can handle muddy boots, kids and rolling carts.
What your VCT installation includes
Testing the concrete for moisture
Many houses in the area are built on concrete, and moisture rising up through it can break down VCT adhesive. We run a moisture test before ordering any tile, so the floor you pick has a fair chance to hold.
Removal and floor prep
We pull up carpet, sheet vinyl or loose tile as needed, grind high spots and fill cracks and dips with patching compound. VCT is thin and rigid, so any bump underneath shows through.
Layout from the center of the room
We snap center lines so the cut tiles at opposite walls come out even. Checkerboards, borders and accent stripes get planned on paper with you before a single tile is set.
Adhesive and rolling
Tiles go into clear thin-spread adhesive once it reaches the right tack. Then we roll the whole floor with a heavy roller to seat every tile firmly.
Transitions and cove base
We fit thresholds where the VCT meets carpet or wood, and we can run vinyl cove base along the walls for a clean, wipeable edge.
First finish coats and cleanup
Once the adhesive has set, we clean the floor and apply the first coats of floor finish so it is protected from day one. Scraps and old flooring leave with us, and the room is swept before we go.
Signs VCT could be the right floor for you
Your utility floor is lifting or torn
Sheet vinyl in laundry rooms often curls at seams and tears where the washer gets pulled out. Individual tiles hold up better, and one damaged square can be swapped out instead of the whole floor.
You want durability on a modest budget
VCT costs less to buy than most hard floors and stands up to heavy foot traffic. It is a sensible pick for a room where function matters more than a wood look.
A garage conversion needs a real floor
Bare concrete in a converted, air-conditioned garage is dusty and hard to keep clean. VCT over a sound, dry slab gives you a smooth surface that handles tool chests and dropped weights.
You love a retro checkerboard
VCT comes in solid colors that make classic black-and-white kitchens and bold diner-style patterns easy to lay out.
Old 9-inch tiles are cracking
Please do not pull those up yourself. Older 9-inch tiles and the black adhesive under them can contain asbestos. We will tell you honestly what we see and recommend testing before anything is disturbed.
How a VCT job runs, start to finish
- 1
Your call and our visit
It starts with a phone conversation about the room and how you use it. Then we come out to measure, look at the existing floor and check the slab.
- 2
A written estimate and your tile choice
You get a written estimate with prep, materials and labor listed separately. We bring samples so you can see the colors in your own light before ordering.
- 3
Acclimation and prep
The tile sits in the room for about two days at normal living temperature so it settles before installation. Meanwhile we remove the old floor and get the subfloor flat and clean.
- 4
Install day
We spread adhesive in sections, set tiles along our layout lines, cut neatly around door jambs and cabinets, and roll everything down. We protect nearby rooms and keep the work area tidy as we go.
- 5
Finish and walkthrough
After the first finish coats, we walk the floor with you and explain simple care: a damp mop with a neutral cleaner, felt pads under furniture and no harsh chemicals.
What affects the cost of a VCT floor
VCT is one of the less expensive floors to buy, so labor and the condition of your subfloor often matter more than the tile itself. We price your job after seeing the room, and every part of the work is listed in writing so nothing comes as a surprise.
- Square footage and room shape
- Open rectangles go quickly. Closets, cabinets and lots of corners mean more cuts and more time.
- What has to come up first
- Carpet comes out fast. Glued-down sheet vinyl or ceramic tile takes longer, and older tile may need testing before removal.
- Slab condition and moisture
- Cracks, old adhesive and uneven spots all need attention before VCT goes down. A slab with high moisture may need a treatment or a different flooring choice.
- Pattern and color mix
- A single color is the simplest layout. Checkerboards, borders and inlays add planning and cutting.
- Cove base and transitions
- Running cove base around the room and fitting several thresholds adds material and labor.
VCT questions we hear often
Something not covered here? (346) 597-8258
Is VCT the same as luxury vinyl tile?
No. VCT is a rigid, mostly limestone tile with solid color through its thickness, and it needs floor finish to look its best. Luxury vinyl tile is thicker and softer, with a printed photo layer and a wear layer that needs no waxing. We install both, so we can help you compare them in your room.
Does VCT really need to be waxed?
It needs a floor finish, often called wax, to seal its surface and give it shine. We apply the first coats as part of the installation. After that, regular damp mopping keeps it clean, and a fresh coat of finish now and then restores the gloss in busy areas.
Can VCT go in a kitchen or bathroom?
Kitchens and laundry rooms are a good fit. The seams are not waterproof, so in a full bathroom with a tub or shower we usually suggest luxury vinyl tile or tile flooring instead. We will be straight with you about which fits the room.
How long before the room is usable again?
Light, gentle foot traffic in socks or soft shoes is usually fine by that evening. Hold off on rolling the washer, refrigerator or heavy furniture back in for roughly 48 hours. The adhesive under each tile needs that stretch to cure, which keeps tiles from sliding or picking up dents.
Can you lay VCT over my existing floor?
Sometimes. A single, firmly attached layer of smooth hard flooring may work as a base after prep. VCT cannot go over carpet or cushioned vinyl, and we will not cover or disturb old 9-inch tiles until testing confirms what they are.
